Halogenation of Pharmaceuticals Is an Impediment to Ready Biodegradability

نویسندگان

چکیده

For pharmacological reasons many active organic pharmaceutical substances (AOPSs) are singly or multiply halogenated. Halogenation can confer optimised steric fitting of an AOPS to its molecular receptor; moreover, by increasing the lipophilicity a compound, passive permeation through bilipid membranes into target cells is enhanced. As halogenation widely suspected inhibit biodegradability in wastewater treatment plants, relationship vs. ready was investigated. Among 230 AOPSs with empirical data, all 70 halogenated not readily biodegradable, and confirmed be impediment biodegradability. counterexample halogenation, hydrophilic substitutions (hydroxy, carboxylic-acid terminal-amine groups) positively correlated Regarding therefore, goals stand stark contrast environmental goals. Possible ideas toward solutions for this contradiction discussed.

Using Biowin, Bayes, and batteries to predict ready biodegradability.

Whether or not a given chemical substance is readily biodegradable is an important piece of information in risk screening for both new and existing chemicals. Despite the relatively low cost of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development tests, data are often unavailable and biodegradability must be estimated. In this paper, we focus on the predictive value of selected Biowin models a...

Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship Models for Ready Biodegradability of Chemicals

The European REACH regulation requires information on ready biodegradation, which is a screening test to assess the biodegradability of chemicals. At the same time REACH encourages the use of alternatives to animal testing which includes predictions from quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models. The aim of this study was to build QSAR models to predict ready biodegradation of ...

Anonymity: An Impediment to Performance in Healthcare

Many teaching hospitals employ a care team structure composed of a broad range of healthcare providers with different skill sets. Each member of this team has a distinct role and a different level of training ranging from attending physician to resident, intern, and medical student. Often times, these different roles lead to greater complexity and confusion for both patients and nursing staff. ...

Blood-brain barrier: an impediment to neuropharmaceuticals.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) serves as a highly selective barrier separating the central nervous system from the systemic circulation. Although contributing to neurological health, the BBB restricts the ability of drugs to reach their site of action and thus presents a major challenge to the treatment of neurological disorders. Advances in our understanding of the complexity of the BBB have fo...

Fickle investors: an impediment to growth?∗

The aim of this paper is to construct theoretical models which help to shed light on the recent criticisms of volatile investment flows. We do not make any empirical attempt to establish the existence or gauge the importance of the adverse effects of volatile investment flows nor do we make any implicit claims regarding the role of such flows in recent exchange rate crises. Instead we simply as...
